That's very strange, our UCAC4 catalog has a different directory structure:
Ucac4.jpg
The readme_u4.txt file says:

4) Files contained on the DVD
-----------------------------
The double-sided DVD contains this "readme_u4" file and the following
directories:

access = example access code (Fortran and C), and sample output
html = snapshot of web pages of UCAC project, history, pictures
papers = some published papers relevant to UCAC, prev.release readme, history
plots = all-sky plots (as described in sections 2 and 3 above)
u4b = binary data files (northern and southern part on 2 sides of DVD)
u4i = index files, supplemental files needed for access code

What is saying your readme?
Thanks,
Fabio.

Guys,
Thanks for the help.
I screwed up. Yes, the UCAC version I was trying to use was the CdC version..............

OK managed to get readable copy of UCAC4....
Question: How can I use say GSC (for brighter stars) together with UCAC4 (for fainter stars?). The preference screen only seems to allow the UCAC4 as the first catalogue and GSC doesn't appear as a second catalogue.
Or is there another way of doing it?

It's not possible, the catalogs on the "left" are those not very deep (only 15-16 mag, like GSC and UCAC), the catalogs on the "right" are the deep ones (18-21 mag) which (some of them) missed the bright stars.
The UCAC4 should contain all the stars of the GSC.
